Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is an analytical technique, which gives characteristic spectra. The spectra can be used like fingerprints in the identification of chemicals. The chemicals can be identified by comparison with reference data or, in some cases, by interpretation, which can be followed by synthesis for confirmation.
When FTIR is connected to a gas chromatograph (GC) and the results are used together with those from mass spectrometry (MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, very complex environmental samples containing unknown chemicals can be analyzed reliably.
