An overview of current analytical methodologies for the determination of dyes in environmental samples is presented. Analytical methods involving liquid chromatography (LC) and mass spectrometry (MS) are reviewed. The combination of capillary electrophoresis (CE) with MS as a new alternative for the analysis and confirmation of polar compounds (and particularly the sulfonated azo dyes) in environmental samples is also discussed. Finally, the extraction and preconcentration of dyes from water samples involving various solid-phase extraction (SPE) protocols are presented. Recent findings in the occurrence of some dyes in the aquatic environment have also been included.
