Abstract

Fundamental properties and structures of potentiometric and amperometric sensors for detection of compounds in gaseous phase are discussed. The discussion primarily deals with membrane sensors containing liquid electrolytes and solid-state sensors employing inorganic and solid polymer electrolytes. Applications of gas sensors for detection of compounds in solution are also briefly discussed. Numerous practical examples are listed in tables. The advantages and drawbacks of various detector designs are critically surveyed and the important trends for further development are briefly outlined.
