Abstract

In this article, we provide first a definition of a distributed database and then we classify different types of distributed database management systems (DDBMSs). Then, three fundamental tasks of a DDBMS, distributed database design, distributed query processing, and distributed transaction management, are introduced, respectively. After that, we address the problems in a federated database system. Finally, we discuss distributed database-related research topics on the Web and XML.
