Abstract

This chapter describes the areas of video conferencing and voice over IP telephony applications. The chapter is broken into three main components: digital media basics, managing interactive multimedia applications over networks, and multimedia networking issues for video conferencing and voice over IP. The digital media basics component will cover basic multimedia compression and streaming technologies. The managing interactive applications section will describe H.323 and SIP, two of the primary protocols deployed to enable video conferencing and voice over IP. Finally, we will describe some techniques that have been deployed to help in the adaptation of digital media to the available network resources on the Internet.
