Agricultural runoff describes the water that moves across the land surface before it enters a permanent surface water body. The water originates as natural precipitation – rainfall or snow melt – or irrigation water. As the water moves across the landscape, it frequently picks up impurities and moves them into surface waters, especially where soils have been disturbed.
