A variety of graphical displays are available for summarizing bivariate data. These include scatter plots, local density plots, and smoothed curve scatter plots. Color is sometimes used effectively to describe local densities. The popularity of the univariate boxplot makes it tempting to derive practical bivariate versions that summarize the key features of bivariate data. Several such bivariate boxplot constructions will be described in this article.
