Environmental informatics is the science that deals with the development and application of methods and tools for environmental information processing. The main objectives of environmental informatics are to make the best possible use of information technologies: (a) to contribute to an effective and efficient protection of the environment; (b) to provide the public with information on the state of the environment and, thus, to increase environmental awareness; (c) to support environmental planning; and (d) to forecast future states of the environment.
