Abstract

The network dedicated to Long-term Ecological Research (LTER) in the United States has grown to 26 sites since it was formed in 1980. In addition to adding sites, the focus of the network has shifted from a concentration on individual and site-based research to a broader, more synthetic network. The goal of these latter studies is to search out general ecological principles that apply to many ecosystems at many different scales. Finally, LTER is developing strong ties and enhanced interactions with the nascent National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON).
