Abstract

Nonparametric regression is a rapidly growing and exciting branch of statistics, both because of recent theoretical developments and because of more widespread use of fast and inexpensive computers. Many methods are currently available, including kernel-based methods, regression splines, smoothing splines and wavelet and Fourier series expansions. This article introduces the main types of smoothing methods and discusses the usefulness of nonparametric regression for analyzing datasets, particularly of the types encountered in environmental statistics.
