A repeated measures study is distinguished by the collection of a sequence of measurements from each unit over a period of time. Repeated measures can be collected in both experimental and observational settings; examples of the latter are often referred to as longitudinal studies. The sequence of measurements from one unit is sometimes called the unit's profile. These profiles form a collection of short time series, and one should expect the measurements from the same unit to be mutually correlated.
