The sign test is the oldest form of the distribution free tests, first introduced by Arbuthnot in 1710. Aside from its well-established status, the sign test is easy to carry out and is applicable in a variety of situations. This article discusses the ordinary sign test for the median based on a single sample and on paired samples, and the Cox–Stuart sign test for detecting monotonic trend.
