One of the most important factors that is within the direct control of managers of plant crops is plant spacing. Managers of agronomic, horticultural, and forestry cropping systems must decide on an initial planting density. Economic considerations dictate that one strives for the ‘optimal’ spacing of plants. The optimum spacing will, of course, vary depending on the management objective. Designed spacing experiments provide reliable information on optimal density for given product objectives.
