The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) provides authority for the cleanup of abandoned landfills, warehouses, and other properties sufficiently contaminated by hazardous waste such that they were deemed to represent threats to human health and the environment. Superfund sites become identified as such when they are added to the US National Priorities List (NPL), a list prioritizing sites most in need of remedial response due to contamination.
