The study of temporal change in environmental quality indicators is motivated by the need to know if the state of the environment has deteriorated or, in some cases, if it has improved as a result of the removal or lessening of stress on the system. The data available for study of temporal change are observational, and usually it is not even possible to relate there to observational data on the level of the stressor. Thus, statements about the change in the quality indicator are made on the basis of measurements and analysis, where other effects have been removed as much as possible from the term corresponding to change over time.
