Trace gases are generally defined as those with low concentrations in the normal atmosphere. Many trace gases of interest are biogenic, produced and/or consumed by micro-organisms in soils, sediments, or water columns, or produced by plants and animals. Others are entirely synthetic and are a by-product of industrial activity.
