Abstract

Trawl surveys for fishery resources are conducted throughout the world by government and non-government agencies. Modern fishery management requires standard time series of data on management units or ‘stocks’ and their response to exploitation: trends in abundance and biomass; spawning success; biological parameters; distribution; and environmental factors that can be provided only through standardized sampling programs. Trawl surveys provide the opportunity for controlled sampling in space and time.
