The features and properties of waste as a fuel for converting waste to energy (WTE) are analyzed considering various types of waste. Nonthermal treatments are also covered – for example, anaerobic digestion and microbial fuel cells. Benefits from best available and best applicable techniques (BREFs) developed with the support from the European Union are discussed.
