Forest ecology focuses on the ecology of forest trees and provides the ecological basis for silviculture, forest management, and forest economics. Recent years have seen forest ecology shift from field trials and correlation studies to more process models. Forest ecology has also been enriched by hydrology, meteorology, soil science, geomorphology, economics, and wildlife management. Watersheds and water budgets, forest geomorphology, and ecosystem management, three areas that have seen significant advances are discussed in more detail.
