Abstract

This article considers how strain gauges and load gauges are being used as sensors (hardware) in conjunction with feature extraction algorithms (software) in structural health monitoring and damage prognosis applications. A concise review of mature strain gauge and load gauge technologies is presented, followed by a discussion on how the community has implemented data mining with these specific types of sensor arrays to make a system assessment of some kind. Examples from current SHM literature are provided for illustration where appropriate.
