Fiber-optic sensors for use in aerospace structural monitoring applications are described. The principles of operation of some commonly used sensors are described with examples of how they are used in aerospace-related structural monitoring applications. The rationale for the use of fiber optics rather than electrical sensors is included. Airframe load monitoring and structural damage detection are discussed and the relative merits for fiber sensing techniques are explained. Some published trials over the last two decades of fiber-optic sensors in aerospace applications are identified with brief descriptions of the outcomes. Finally, some opinions on the future prospects of fiber-optic sensing in aerospace are offered.
