Summary

About 1/3 of organic coatings are applied to products at the time of manufacture. Such coatings are called “original equipment manufacture” (OEM) or sometimes “industrial” coatings. Finishing of automobiles and light trucks is the largest single market. Colored base coats with a metallic pigment or other special effect pigment top coated with a clear coat are most common. Other major OEM applications include coatings for appliances, containers (cans), and coil coating.
