Summary
Cordierite is presently used exclusively in monolithic supports for automobile exhaust catalysis. However, new applications require monoliths with substantially higher melting points, preferably above 1600°C. The properties and process capabilities that make cordierite useful at present are outlined. Newly developed ceramic materials designed to duplicate these properties as well as offer much higher melting points are also described. Detailed property data are given for several examples.
