Summary

The method of edge toughness evaluation is demonstrated to be similar to that used in the Neolithic Age. It is effective for determining fracture resistance of high-hardness armor ceramics, dental ceramics, and nanoceramics when it is impossible to employ standard fracture test methods. Wacker silicon carbide, Prozyr bioceramics, and nanozirconia ceramics as well as different structural ceramic materials were studied. The relationship between edge toughness and SEVNB fracture toughness for the ceramics under study is shown to be almost linear. This new method is inexpensive, easy to implement and can be used in any standard mechanical test laboratory.
