Summary

A processing technique was used to fabricate dense, two-phase nanocomposite samples of alumina −40 vol. % magnesium aluminate. The microstructure was found to be a bicontinuous mixture of the two phases. Hardness was measured over a broad load range and the indentation size effect measured for both Knoop and Vickers indentation. Samples had a load-independent Knoop hardness of 14.9 GPa at 19.6 N and a load-independent Vickers hardness of 17.8 GPa at 19.6 N. The Vickers hardness comes close to the reported hardness of very finegrained aluminas. Scratch testing revealed the material exhibited localized plastic deformation.
