Summary

Alumina/ 15 vol% SiC particles, alumina/ 20vol% SiC whiskers, mullite/ 15 vol% SiC particles and mullite/ 15 vol% SiC whiskers composites having excellent crack-healing ability are subjected to crack-healing under elevated static and cyclic stresses at elevated temperatures from 1000 °C to 1200 °C. The bending tests were done after the specimens had been subjected to the crack-healing temperature. From the obtained result, the threshold stresses during crack-healing, which is upper limit stress been safely able to apply during crack-healing, are determined. The determined threshold stresses have been 64 % fracture strengths of the as-cracked specimens, respectively.
