Summary

Titania (TiO2), titanium aluminate (TiO2*Al2O3), and enstatite (MgSiO3) multilayer films were deposited on to a sapphire (Al2O3) fiber by the pulsed laser ablation technique using a KrF excimer laser. MgSiO3 was used for the debonding interphase, and TiO2 and TiO2*Al2O3 were used to protect MgSiO3 and Al2O3 from chemical reaction during processing and operation of composite. The composite was hot pressed by embedding coated fibers in Al2O3 matrix. SEM and EDS were used to analyze the microstructure and microcomposition of the coating layers before and after hot pressing. The partial decomposition of MgSiO3 to SiO2 glassy phase was observed during hot pressing. A push-out experiment was also conducted to determine interfacial properties of the hot pressed composite.
