Summary

This paper reports progress on the rapid prototyping and manufacturing of structural ceramics using Laminated Object Manufacturing (LOM). The LOM system is being adapted to accommodate ceramic tape and fibrous pre-forms as starting materials for the direct fabrication of complex shapes with curved surfaces. Several families of ceramic materials have been targeted for rapid fabrication via LOM, including monolithic ceramics, continuous fiber ceramic matrix composites (CMCs), and short fiber CMCs. The silicon carbide (SiC) system has been chosen to demonstrate this new technology. This report provides a description of work accomplished to date using the LOM process to produce monolithic SiC articles and continuous fiber SiC/SiC composites. Overall, a comprehensive program is being conducted which will expand the envelope of ceramic part design, increase the degree of automation, and reduce the time and cost involved in customized, limited-quantity ceramic manufacturing.
