Summary

Fabric and film samples of Nextel™312 ceramic were processed under a matrix of time, temperature and atmospheric conditions in order to study the mechanism of surface nitridation. XRD, Static and Time of Flight SIMS, and XPS were used to characterize the samples by providing phase composition, elemental concentration profiles, and surface chemistry of the affected surface region and the bulk. These data were used to determine the critical variables of the nitridation process and will be used to determine the mechanism and create a model for the surface nitridation reaction.
