Summary

Nanocrystalline silicon nitride matrix composites with dispersed nano-size titanium nitride (TiN) particles were prepared by sintering nanostructured composite powder composed of nano-size silicon nitride, TiN particles and amorphous titanium. The nanostructured composite powder was produced by high energy milling of silicon nitride powder and titanium powder. The sintering temperature decreased with increasing titanium content. The structure of the sintered body was characterized by SEM, TEM and TEM-EDX. The sintered body was composed of α-silicon nitride matrix whose grain size was about 20-30 nm in diameter and dispersed TiN particles whose diameter was about 50 nm.
