Summary

β Si6-ZAlZOZN8-Z/tBN(turbostatic BN) nano-composite powder was prepared by reducing the mixtures of β-Si6-ZAlZOZN8-Z/{H3BO3+2CO(NH2)2} in NH3 atmosphere. The obtained β-Si3Al3O3N5/15vol%tBN nano-composite powder was hot-pressed in N2+5%H2 atmosphere. X-ray analysis revealed that the sintered composites were composed of β-Si3Al3O3N5 and turbostatic/hexagonal BNBN (t h-BN). SEM and TEM observations indicated that the nano-sized t h-BN particulates were dispersed within β-Si3Al3O3N5 matrix grains and also at the grain boundaries, depending on their size. As expected, the hardness decreased with the BN content. However, the fracture strength was strongly improved. But the fracture toughness varied little.
