Summary

Silicon nitride containing 0 - 5 wt % β-Si3N4 whisker was prepared by tape casting and gas pressure sintering. Based on flow dynamics considerations, the tape casting technique was modified to align the whiskers more efficiently. Depending on the stacking sequence of the tapes containing aligned whiskers, three different kinds of specimens for each whisker content were prepared. Shrinkage during densification of specimen with unidirectionally oriented whiskers (“unidirectional”) exhibited strong anisotropy. However, this was almost eliminated in the tape casting plane by a proper stacking sequence. “Unidirectional” specimens exhibited strong anisotropy of the indentation crack length measurements and they demonstrated higher 3 point flexural strengths than the baseline material containing no whiskers.
