Summary

The sudden release of gases during batch melting and during fining may cause foam. The gas formation in the mek depends on chemical reactions forming decomposition or fining gases; the degassing rate is related to the redox state and sulfate content of the melt and batch. Foaming takes place as the formation rate of gases exceeds the bubble collapse rate at the glass melt surface. This paper shows the mechanism of foaming in glass furnaces and the effect of batch composition, furnace atmosphere, and temperatures on the foam thickness of glass melts.
