Summary

Dense/porous multi-layered silicon nitride was prepared with fine/coarse powder mixture as the starting material for the porous layers. The strength and elastic modulus decreased monotonically with the total porosity of the specimens. From the fracture surface observation and discussion on fracture mechanics, it was suggested that the fracture origin is one of the pores in the porous layers.
