Summary

SiC whisker growing on Nicalon™, Hi-Nicalon™ and Tyranno-SA™ fabrics was carried out at 1100°C for 3 h using MTS (CH3SiCl3) and H2 as source and diluent gases, respectively. On all the fabrics, β-SiC whiskers were well grown at the input gas ratio of 60 after pyrolytic carbon coating. By application of the whisker growing process in the SiCf/SiC composite using Hi-Nicalon™ fabric, an enhanced homogeneity of microstructures as well as a higher density could be obtained at the same processing conditions of a composite by only the conventional CVI process.
