Improved mechanical behavior in Nicalon/SiC composites has been produced by controlling the interfacial bond through coating of the fibers with thin films before densification. Varying degrees of bonding have been achieved with different coating materials and film thicknesses. The effects of bonding on fiber pullout, and thus mechanical behavior, have been investigated. Fiber-matrix bond strengths have been semiquantitatively evaluated using indentation methods and a simple tensile test. Electron microscopy and surface analysis were utilized to characterize interface compositions and structures. These results have been used to further examine fiber-matrix interfaces and their influence on mechanical behavior.
