Summary
The microstructure of sol-gel-derived thin films can be manipulated by control of the precursor structure prior to deposition and the relative rates of condensation and evaporation during deposition. In general, weakly branched precursors deposited under conditions in which the condensation rate is low result in very compact, microporous films. Increased branching of the precursors and/or increased condensation rates result in reduced film densities.
