Summary

Contact damage resistance poses great problems where ceramics are used as structural components in contact. Therefore, a Si3N4/TiC/SiCwh composite was formulated and tested for improved contact damage resistance. A colloidal filtration technique was used to process optimum homogeneous composite microstructures. Characterization included coefficient of friction, hardness, fracture toughness, and profilometry measurements. The material was shown to provide increased resistance to contact damage with a simultaneous increase in hardness and fracture toughness.
