Summary

A dense phase, pneumatic conveying system was installed in 1979 to convey mixed glass batch from the batch house to each of four glass melting furnaces. Since the length of each of the four conveying lines is different, the effect of the conveying distance on the particle sizing of the glass batch materials could be studied. The general effect that was found was that the particle sizing of the batch materials is made smaller over the longer conveying distances. The finer batch materials combined with larger volumes of conveying air further create segregation inside the batch holding bins that is not only difficult to correct but also causes problems in furnace operations when the level of batch in the holding bins fluctuate. It is concluded that pneumatic conveying of mixed, glass batch is acceptable but only for short distances and for simple conveying paths.
