Summary

A process has been set up to select suppliers and to ensure that quality products are supplied. The process begins with an analysis of suppliers of a particular product to determine the capability of each to supply quality. All phases of the supplier's quality control are studied. The supplier is shown the end product that uses the supplied item. The supplier is told exactly what will be expected and is given an opportunity to decline being a supplier. Once a company is certified as a supplier, Armco works with the supplier as a partner to help ensure that quality products are supplied. After two years of implementing the process, only eight suppliers have been certified. Armco has found that 50% of the time when unsatisfactory products are supplied, that the supplier was not given adequate detailed requirements for the product.
