Summary

An optimization of the mixing procedure, in processing Si3N4/20wt% SiC whisker composites, was performed with particular attention to the effect of a selected dispersant added to the mixing medium. Fully densified specimens were fabricated without using sintering aids, by hot isostatic pressing (HIP). A quantitative evaluation of the whisker dispersion was performed by means of image analysis and microindentation test. This basic investigation is discussed in order to make clear the effect of inhomogeneities on toughening behavior in whisker reinforced ceramics.
