Summary

Nicalon™ fiber-reinforced aluminum oxide and aluminum nitride matrix composites were fabricated using directed metal oxidation technology. Flexural strengths and fracture toughnesses of the Nicalon™ / Al2O3 composites were measured between 21°C and 1200°C. The removal of residual aluminum from the pore network in the highly interconnected α-alumina matrix had no significant effect on strength and toughness. The composite exhibits good thermal shock behavior and high interlaminar shear strengths. Nicalon™/AlN composites are in the early stages of development. Their flexural strengths and fracture toughnesses were measured at room temperature and 1000°C.
