Summary

Advanced ceramic composites have been developed using a reaction-bonded silicon nitride (RBSN) matrix derived from submicron silicon powders, combined with various types of SiC fiber reinforcement. The addition of a pre-ceramic binder (a polysilazane copolymer) promises to improve the density and other properties of these composites. The experimental process is described, and preliminary results are discussed.
