Summary

The erosive wear, i.e., the material removal by sharp particle impact, in five aluminas was studied. The aluminas varied in porosity, purity, and grain size, and exhibited varying degrees of mode-I R-curve behavior. The erosive wear rates were similar for the five aluminas, and no correlation with the R-curve susceptibility was obtained. This lack of R-curve behavior of the lateral cracks was explained by modeling the lateral crack as a crack propagating in a mode-II stress field, and utilizing the fact that several aluminas do not exhibit R-curve in mode-II.
