Hexoloyr̀ SX, a new member of Carborundum's silicon carbide family of materials, has been demonstrated to possess better strength and toughness than those of its parent Hexoloy*SA silicon carbide. Typical values of room temperature four-point bend strength and SENB toughness of post-HIP'ed Hexoloyr̀ SX range from 621 to 827 MPa (90-120 ksi) and 8 to 10 MPa-m1/2, respectively. These room temperature mechanical properties are comparable to the best of silicon nitride materials available, but at a significantly lower raw material cost. Moreover, preliminary results also show Hexoloyr̀ SX to have excellent creep, wear, and erosion resistance.
