Application of advanced ceramics is often limited by both cost and a proscribed view of the materials options. These points are illustrated by two applications: welding cups and engine valves. Approaches to both of these using composites of carbon-based matrices with and without fibers and ceramic coatings are illustrated. Performance superior to monolithic ceramics (e.g., Si3 N4) is shown along with lower costs.
