Summary

Surface modification by coating of silicon carbide platelets (SiCp) by a colloidal-chemistry-based technique has been further studied to assess the process parameters that affect properties of coatings of Al2O3, particulates. The parameters included surface-cleaning of SiCp, size distribution of Al2O3 particles, and concentration of Al2O3, particles in the slips. A semi-quantitative technique by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was developed for the characterization of morphology of surface coatings and degree of surface coverage. These studies indicated that the measurement of electro-kinetic sonic amplitude (ESA) of dispersions by using acoustophoresis technique is a powerful tool in characterizing the coated and uncoated surfaces.
