A fabrication process of SiC whisker-reinforced SiC ceramics consisting of whisker CVD-coating for the control of interfacial bonding, slurry-pressing and HIP consolidation has been developed. Microstructural observation confirmed the incorporation of the interfacial carbon layer in the composites brought about remarkable whisker bridging/pull-out in the fracture. Whisker-bridging was considered to be a predominant toughening mechanism. To optimize the interfacial properties. the effect of coating conditions, i.e. amount of coating and CVD temperature, on the fracture toughness were studied The effect of whisker diameter on the fracture toughness and anisotropy in the fracture toughness were also investigated.
