Summary

Si3N4-SiC whisker composites were fabricated using several routes, i.e. pressure filtration or C.I.P. followed by H.P. or H.I.P., The fracture strength ranges from 650 MPa to 750 MPa on account of the whiskers orientation. Compared to the Si3N4 matrix, the toughness is increased. A strong R-curve effect can be obtained, suggesting that to be efficient the whisker diameter must exceed a critical size.
