A strategy is presented for development of a design-for-manufacturing (DFM) tool The DFM concept, whereby product and process design for ceramic substrates can be determined prior to making key manufacturing decisions, is presented with the goal of reducing product cycle time. A technological strategy composed of model building engineering verification of the model, and integration of a system of verified models is proposed. A simplified system of models could be composed of the following: fired properties as a Junction of raw materials, rheology of mixed wet batch, batch flow through extrusion hardware, strength of hardware, drying, firing cycle, and product strength. An expert system shell allows interaction among the models, resulting in an optimal design that can be manufactured.
